World Cup 2023: New Zealand beat England by 9 wickets

In the opening match of the 2023 World Cup held in Ahmedabad on Thursday, England, the reigning World Champion, set a target of 283 runs for the team that finished as the runner-up in the previous event.

In the ICC World Cup 2023 opener at the Narendra Modi Stadium, New Zealand’s stand-in captain, Tom Latham, won the toss and decided that England would bat first.

New Zealand limited England to a total of 282/9 in their allotted 50 overs. The top scorers for England were Joe Root with 77 runs, Jos Buttler with 43, Jonny Bairstow with 33, Herry Brook with 25, Liam Livingstone with 20, and Adil Rasheed with 15 runs.

New Zealand bowlers performed well, with Matt Henry taking 5 wickets, Mitchel Santner and Glenn Philips claiming 2 wickets each, and Trent Boult and Rachin Ravindra securing one wicket each.

Earlier, In the World Cup 2023 opener, New Zealand made this decision as they rested their regular captain, Kane Williamson, who is recovering from a knee injury, and fast bowlers Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson, who are also recovering from injuries.

On the other hand, England’s captain, Jos Buttler, stated that they would have preferred to bowl first as well. He emphasized that while they are proud of their previous World Cup win, this is a new tournament, and they are here to attack and win it again.

Notably, England is missing Ben Stokes due to a minor hip injury, and Harry Brook has replaced him at number four in the batting order.
